Urahara tends to be a laid-back, upbeat, humorous, eccentric character, when the occasion calls for it, he exhibits a deceptively shrewd and serious side. To divert his opponents, he frequently engages in idle chat and displays of care. Despite his carefree attitude, he always uses good manners and is occasionally snarky in his speech. Yoruichi Shihin observes that whenever he becomes excited about something, he has a tendency to overdo it.

Urahara’s personality was a little bit different from what it is now approximately 110 years ago. He was perceived as an anxious, agitated, and quiet person in his early years as a captain. He wasn’t really confident in himself and didn’t have much faith in his leadership skills. He also struggled from time to time with how to handle his division.

He appeared to be somewhat at ease in his prior post in the 2nd Division Detention Unit while being uncomfortable in his role. But he gradually became more serious and determined in his resolve to assume his job as captain.

Abilities and Power

Urahara is a very talented swordsman, able to deliver attacks that are both powerful and swift. He is capable of making attacks with absolute accuracy and stopping them in an instant. Ulquiorra Cifer, the fourth Espada, chose not to engage Urahara because of his talents, which she deems to be extremely hazardous.

Although it appears that swordsmanship is Urahara’s favorite method of combat, he is quite skilled at fusing it with his other abilities and moving between them in an instant. He typically uses a variety of strikes to disorient and catch his opponents off guard for sneak attacks.

Despite Ichigo’s much larger blade during their training, he kept the pressure on him continually. As demonstrated against Yammy, the tenth Arrancar, he rarely relies on anyone other than Shikai. Through a method he developed, relying on pure talent versus the blade’s spirit, he quickly attained Bankai.

Hakuda Master

Being prohibited from using firearms in the Nest of Maggots as the former head of the Onmitsukid’s Detention Unit, Urahara honed his unarmed combat skills.  At the height of her abilities, Yoruichi is forced to engage in serious combat with his skills during their routine sparring sessions. Even as a third-seat officer during his time as a Shinigami, he easily dispatched a number of Shinigami deserters unarmed and then escaped unharmed.

Shunpo Master

Urahara possesses outstanding Shunpo talent and is knowledgeable about all of its different techniques. He is so quick that when he switches himself out for a portable Gigai to confuse an opponent, they do not notice; this is further illustrated by the fact that he successfully employs this strategy against Aizen.

Further evidence of his mastery of this ability was the fact that he could always keep up with Yoruichi’s speed when she was at her fastest during sparring sessions.

Urahara himself keeps his locked sword for battle, his Bankai assumes the shape of a gigantic woman with mannequin-like arms and dark, braided hair arranged in loops on her head. She also wears a revealing crimson robe. Using the Tenshintai he developed, Urahara studied Bankai in three days.

Yasutora Sado visits Urahara for training, and Urahara tells him that in order for Sado to advance, he must battle against the power of a Bankai. Urahara then assigns Renji Abarai to the duel, claiming that his own Bankai is unfit for instruction or aiding others.
