Kaguya-sama: Love is War Season 2 Episode 9 - Review

This week’s episode was much better than the previous one as there was nothing as weird as we witnessed last week. And despite of the fact that I still do not like lino, surprisingly her character was not as plain as it has been so far and I actually had fun watching her in this episode. That’s probably because her imaginations are quite unreal. It’s funny that she fantasize about being a heroine in a serial where she would bring change in a serious and heartless student council body that will later bring justice to the entire school. But unfortunately for lino it’s not possible in this series because it’s not that typical story.

Although the whole imagination about lino being the protagonist was hilarious but it was also quite arrogant of her, thinking that she is the only one who can bring a change to the system. So, things haven’t really changed when it comes to her egoistic nature. But, honestly, in Kaguya-Sama, all characters are egoistic at some point. It’s good to see that even if her imaginations were a bit wild, her friend commented about lino always jumping to the conclusion and understood that the president is not “lust incarnate”. I’m glad that her friend took it as a misunderstanding and did not just believed everything he mentioned because I was not expecting this from her friend. So, it actually makes me happy that this show did not typically showed what I expected. I like it how her friend made her realize that it was a misunderstanding even if it made her think that Shirogane is the bad guy for Kaguya.

I still don’t understand what led lino have these wired imaginations about Shirogane being “lust incarnate” and then Kaguya being a dominatrix. So when being a “protagonist”, lino tried to ask Kaguya about her evil act, she received such a pure response from her that she ended up being even more confused. That’s why one assumptions should not be based on mere delusions because lack of proper evidence would only lead to more confusion. So, at the end of the day, it was lino who suffered.

Moving on to the next story with another tsundere conversation with Hayasaka. Kaguya has still not overcome the feelings she had while almost kissing Shirogane in last week’s episode and trying hard to be not awkward infront of him. Her feelings for Shirogane has also become stronger so it’s not easy for her to hide those feelings. Her mind games is not the same I this season as it is evidently failing now and things become more awkward when she recalls things that has happened between her and Shirogane. So Hayasaka came up with an idea of any habit that could calm her when she is nervous and confused infront of him.

The famous in Chika dance is something that everyone expects to see again but we got to see Kaguya dance instead. And so we get to see the relaxing ritual in the opening where Kaguya was touching her cheek. Kaguya successfully adopt the habit of that touch for relaxation but it has also become a trigger to switch her back to Ice Kaguya. So it seems like, it is not the habit to relax her but only helps to stop her emotions. It’s not the right thing for her to accept those emotions because that’s how this show goes. It happens in a magnificent way when the fight scene occurs between Shirogane and Kaguya. Although Shirogane pushed Kaguya away to stop her from that relaxing ritual because of big concerned for her but he shouldn’t have done that because that led him to fall down as he was so desperate to stay away. The whole scene was very hilarious and I laughed out loud as it was executed very well. I pit both the love birds Shirogane and Kaguya for being such love sick fools.

Moving onwards the last part of the episode where we see Ishigami with short hair which looks cute on him. Surprisingly, he becomes the part of the cheer leading squad for the upcoming sports program. It’s not normal to have a person like Ishigami to join the cheer leading team as it requires energy and enthusiasm which Ishigami lacks big time. Even his classmates were looking at him as they were wondering why he is there. Ishigami noticed that look on their face and also commented the same thing. One thing which I found quite interesting was the missing eyes on the team of cheer leading faces because that’s probably how Ishigami looks at people he doesn’t know. I really admire how I was shown from Ishigami’s perspectives and this attention to detail is something that we can expect from this show. As it was from his point of view, there was only one person with eyes and that was someone he was familiar with. I think that the girl with sort of purple colored hair is will return. Her character design seems detailed enough to be an important character.

Kaguya-sama: Love is War Season 2 Episode 9 - Review

I am fond of Kaguya and Ishigami bonding scenes. They act like siblings to each other as Kaguya is always there to give him her support whenever he needs help and like a sister she also teases him when she is irritated. That’s exactly how elder sisters act to younger brothers. I really like their relationship as Kaguya was the first girl who stayed by his side since they were younger. And although Ishigami thinks she is intimidating, I wish that he understands that that she is someone he can trusts. She even lend him her uniform when he needed it for the cross dressing thing in the cheer leading team.

I appreciate that Ishigami is moving forward and trying hard to get out of his comfort zone. I like how he came to realize that it was not right of him to think low of cheer leading team when he was doing nothing with his life. He wishes to move ahead and do something with his life instead of stuck in one place and do nothing and I think that joining the cheer leading team was the right decision and it will help him develop a character. His character has already received some development in since the first season so further character development would be a good thing. Particularly, when he is still stuck in his haunting past. I really like Ishigami.

This episode was wildly thrilling and it is directed towards a path that definitely leads to something to do with Ishigami. Things seems to get better for him. Another thing worth admiring in this episode was the animation. It was exceptionally great particularly during Kaguya’s dance scene. From the movements to the minute details of the dance steps was perfectly animated and the efforts made for the accuracy was evident during the entire dance sequence. It’s actually funny that they chose that particular scene for this kind of detailed animation. And when Kaguya was speaking with Hayasaka, the actions was perfectly animated and the movements were needlessly neat as they made some extra effort to make it that way. Those extra efforts they put in the animation during that one particular scene was quite funny because I don’t understand “why so much efforts”? If they wouldn’t have made the animation so precise and extraordinarily neat then it wouldn’t have look bad either. If they wouldn’t have made such effort to to make the animation extraordinarily neat and precise, things wouldn’t have look so bad either and still deliver what it meant with less efforts. But nonetheless A1 did the great job with the animation in THISepisode.

I also like the plenty of American references in this episode. It was something unexpected but I like it. Fans who have been exposed to the American media or those residing there and are familiar with American media would have definitely these references. Although reference from Fifty Shades of Gray wasn’t necessary because I personally do not like it but some fans may have enjoyed that too.
