Itsuwari no Freya (Prince Freya): Manga Review

Freya is like any other ordinary village girl who resides near mountains. Due to occurrence of some course of events, she is asked to take place of Prince Edvar who is on the verge of death as she looks exactly like him. She starts taking the roles of Prince to make sure that the “Prince of Hope” is still alive and is not killed by assassin. Is it possible for an ordinary girl to become a prince and lead the knights to protect the country from neighboring kingdom of Sigurdian?

A she has always lived an ordinary life in a village, the plot will show a remarkable character development after she steps up as a prince. She son finds herself into some intense circumstances. Appearance is not alone going to help her keep the secret but she also has to adapt his personality traits so that no one from his knights and Edvard’s aides become doubtful. It also raises a question that what kind of a prince, Freya will turn out to be by the end of the manga?

Apart of leading the knights, there are many other obligatory things that Prince must get involve into like politics, swordsmanship, etiquettes etc. The manga showcases the the training process of an ordinary person to become a royalty.

The plot stands out as it’s rare to see the female protagonist to take place of a male and that too a prince in a serious theme. It’s more than just about how she resolves the issues like the prince would do but how she uses her physical abilities to solve those problems. There are also things that she needs to learn and work hard for like swordsmanship as she is not good at it. The story of Prince Freya is like Jeanne D’Arc and Mulan but this gives the vibes of reverse harem because of so many good-looking knights.

There are some loopholes in the plot. It makes us wonder about so many things that are left unexplained like why does Freya need to replace the prince when the next in the line can take over the monarch. Is there no one in the family of Prince Freya who could take over the throne in the future. There are also some more obvious questions like how did Freya get to live after falling off the cliff.

The story is quite quick paced. The transitions between the chapters in not smooth as their the other chapter misses some of the essential information from the previous one. There are many things that are needed to be explained and that could make the story more captivating and compelling for the readers. But since the translated version of the manga has just begun so it won’t be fair to judge on the basis of just two volumes.

A in all, Prince Freya is an entertaining and interesting read. The story builds up quite well, the art work with medieval setting is captivating. The characters are quite expressive as you can judge every character, Freya meets and their indentations from the beginning of the series. It gives a good lesson that about how we perceive others. The knights are all committed to their duties which is worth appreciating but it’s understandable that sometimes you have to decide o your rather than depending on the leader.
