Fruits Basket Season 2 Episode 1: Review

The amazing world of Fruits Basket is back with its intriguing characters and we can see how faithful it is with its source material. It started with some flashbacks to remind the viewers about things happened in the last season from Tohru’s perspective and then we were back in the current time. The whole episode was shown from Makato’s perspective who has nothing in her mind except Yuki. Although I do understand the purpose of this episode and the fact that it was actually about how Yuki and his development but still, the premiere episode centered around Makato was a little annoying. But we can’t complain much as no matter from whose perspective it was, we could see a drastic change in Yuki’s character. Since Yuki is my favorite character I’m glad to see him throughout the episode but it was from a stalker’s perspective so it felt a little weird.

I’m not really fond of Kyo and I don’t see the reason why he is loved by so many fans. I know like other Sohma members, his life has not been easy and probably was the most miserable but that doesn’t justify his attitude towards Yuki. I’s annoying how jestingly and casually he keeps degrading Yuki having no idea how it badly hurts Yuki. They need to talk about this but Kyo seems to be stubborn about the idea of hating Yuki. Kyo’s words hit hard on Yuki’s sensitive heart.

And we were finally introduced to two significant characters and members of student council and I must say it one hell of an introduction. It starts with Machi creating mess in the counselling room. There is something weird about this girl and it was even more disturbing when she startled and quickly moved away when Yuki asked if she is okay. Then we were saw Manabe and his character was the most interesting one in the entire episode. I won’t go in detail about this character but I don’t know what to make out of it. At some point he seemed like a negative character who openly made fun of Yuki and reminded him of Ayame. Being a Yuki fan I was quite angry to see him being so irritating but some of his action seemed to have a positive impact and we also watched Yuki reacting on that which is something he never does. The scene was hilarious, the way Yuki reacted after realizing Manabe’s resemblance with Ayame and knowing that both Manabe and Machia re the new members of the student council. While laughing crazily I was also feeling bad for poor Yuki.

Talking about the main focus of the episode, which is the Makato’s creepy obsession for Yuki, was a little too much for me. Although her behavior is very bizarre when it comes to her infatuation but I like that there is also some depth in her character as we saw her wondering about her own actions and obsession. She could be good friends and ca actually get along with him if she normally communicate with him. Motoko also notices the change in Yuki as he was a little less reserve than before and she also acknowledges it in her heart that if the only reason Yuki is talking to her and smiling at her, it’s because of Tohru’s company. She seems an antagonist having some animosity for Tohru for being so close to Yuki and making him the person he is now but even despite of that she admits that Tohru has been a positive influence on Yuki’s life. I like how it showed the complexity of Makoto’s character.

Fruits Basket Season 2 Episode 1: Review

It’s good that the season started with Yuki and centered it on his life in school instead of all the family drama. It showed how he has changed and finally starting to open up and sociable in school because that’s what he always wanted and since this is just the start I am excited to see more positive development. It’s good to see him getting out of his family confinement and interacting with others in school like a normal person.  I am also interested to see more of Manabe as he sees to make a great impact on Yuki’s character.
