A rookie gamer Kaede (referred as Maple in the game) agrees to try a new VRMMO after the recommendation of her best friend but she start the game in a very strange way as she put all her strength in defense to prevent herself from getting hurt. Having no clue about these games, she hesitantly makes her way in a New World Online and in some way becomes one of the best players by choosing options that the game developers did not see coming and going against the rules. But Maple doesn’t care about those things as she just wants to enjoy the game and make new friends in the process.

BOFURI: I Don’t Want to Get Hurt, So I’ll Max Out My Defense – Review

Maple is alien to the world of online games so she is not familiar about how things work specially when it comes to making friends. It doesn’t seem strange to her to make new friends in the game. But she ends up making many friends all thanks to her kind nature that attracts many and gather under one shelter called Maple Tree guild. Sometimes her carefree attitude put her in a problematic situation but her allies are always there to offer their help.

The creators of the New World Online had no idea that they would have to handle such eccentric player. They are always thinking of ways to weaken her not-so-powerful abilities so that other gamers can have a chance of fighting but Maple inadvertently defeats them and everytime they come up with a new plan, she ruins it. She reaches the higher position f the game with her defensive abilities which allows her to gain outrageously powerful abilities like calling upon a poisonous dragon, devouring attacks with the help of her shield, transforming into an angel, transforming into a Gundam and transforming into a huge lizard. And these abilities are not limited to just these. It is very evident why she is able to ditch the developer’s plans.

A mission in the beginning of the game gave Maple a turtle as a price that she pets and named, Syrup. She loves Syrup like a real life pet. She dotes Syrup to the extent that she plays some extra missions inorder to get skills for Syrup that eventually transform Syrup into a huge turtle that can fly. It’s not even for the sake of her mission or win the game but to have fun flying on the back of her gigantic pet turtle. Later Syrup become powerful to the extent that he is able to catch enemies through vines and release a hyper beam attack through a cute scream. No one can think of something like this but adorable little maple.

Maple is  very kind hearted gamer and after gathering Maple’s guild she does everything in her strength to help her friends. She spams a blocking attack inorder to keep pace with the high speed friend Sally, make new players her accomplice in a mission to gear up their levels and devotes a large part of the final event protecting the guild’s base with a certain skill that minimize the damage to her friends. No doubt that the other layers are very skilled and powerful in their own league but when it comes to help and protect other, Maple is the best.

In the end of every episode we get to see some posts via a chatroom conversing current events in the game. Some unknown users initially doubt Maple but later realizes that Maple is loveable and enjoys her silly shenanigans and eventually starts to cheer for her. They also referred her as their angel which is so cool. Maple surely deserves a fan club.

BOFURI: I Don’t Want to Get Hurt, So I’ll Max Out My Defense – Review

Maple is a kind and cheerful beam of shiny light that sparkles in the darkness. She is the cure for all these stressful days that could bring smile on our faces with her cheerful and lively nature. Probably we are exaggerating that but we adore Maple and we are grateful to introduce us to such an amazing character.
