At Night, I Become a Monster: Review

Life is balanced with two sides of everything. If there is bad then there is also good and vice versa. Likewise, dreams are not always sweet and beautiful. When there are nights of amazing dreams then there are also some nights that gives you scariest and darkest nightmares. Theses nightmares mostly show some terrible beings and monsters. But what it would be like to live those nightmares where we are not one being haunted but instead one of those monsters who haunts others. If you think it would be great then it’s not what it’s like in Well, At Night, I Become a Monster.

Everyone have secrets that we keep hidden from others. A high school student, Adachi has also a secret. He seems like any other high school kid in daylight but at night he completely changes. When the night comes, Adachi turns into a creature with more than two eyes and legs. We still have no idea if he remains a nice and kind main character or scary monster as Adachi doesn’t know about himself. Although he knows how it feels but it seems he is quite intimidating since he said that he cries dark tears.

At Night, I Become a Monster by Yoru Sumino is a brilliantly written novel. Storytelling is something that is not mostly prioritized in the light novels. Usually light novels pays attention to the themes, artwork, title and the plotline. While focusing on those in order to sell the story, the thing which lack the most is the storytelling. But At Night, I Become a Monster doesn’t neglect any aspect and the storytelling is surely the best aspect. It makes the reader stick to the story. The beauty of its storytelling is that you can imagine every detail of it.

Adachi turns into a monster. Surprisingly, he gets used to it like getting accustomed to any ordinary thing in life. He explores it for few weeks and then adjust to it. One night, he sneaked inside his school to get his homework that he left earlier in the classroom. That night he runs into his classmate, Yano who is treated as an outsider by everyone at school. The monster Adachi and Yano get closer to each other with the passage of time meeting every night. But at day time Adachi treats her the same way others treat her and ignore her like he always did despite of caring for her during night.

There is nothing more disturbing than bullying. It can be a cause mental torture and can also lead to for someone to be societal. Therefore, avoid reading further or even this novel if the topic of bullying makes you feel uncomfortable.

For some reason Yano is disliked by the popular students of the school. She is bullied and treated badly by the students of the school. It becomes trend for the entire class to ignore and outcast her. Among these students, the protagonist Adachi is included. Although the character development is one of best things happen in the novel especially when it comes to Adachi but it also shows how a friend can be a part of those who bully or ignore it like they didn’t see anything.

At Night, I Become a Monster is a great novel and worth admiring. It doesn’t’ lack when it comes to storytelling, great plot and character development. It’s scary but stands out in many ways. Despite of featuring a monster, it portrays a different horror which does not involve the hideous looking creature but the terrifying actions of humans.
