Kodansha’s Something’s Wrong With Us started with a captivating story and interesting characters. The first Volume was quite impressive. Now that that the Volume 2 has been released, let’s see if it’s as good and gripping as the previous Volume.
The story continues where the first Volume left off. Nao and Tsubaki have gotten into some trouble after delivering some sweets to one of the most respectable and significant clients. The sweet that Nao has made for the client turned red which is not good for their reputation.
This conveys the message that Kogetsuan will not be catering them in the future but they informs Tsubaki that it was not what they ordered in the first place. Nao has to find out how it happened to make things right before things get worst and she lose all the faith that Kogetsuan has in her because if that happens she won’t be able to find out about the murder.
Compared to the first Volume this Volume is a bit slow. Most part of it revolves around Nao trying to figure out the mystery behind the sweets ending up stained red and learning a new recipe to regain the client’s trust and improve the shop’s reputation. In the middle of all this we get to know that Tsubaki’s mother was behind all this as she wanted to kick Nao out so that she won’t become a potential candidate to inherit the store.
We also get to learn Tsubaki’s position in the family and that his grandfather is reluctant to make Tsubaki the owner of Kogetsuan. The reason behind this decision is because in the past one of their ancestors was betrayed after getting married and a recipe was stolen. Since then the store can only be inherit by those who are related by blood and Tsubaki’s grandfather is doubtful about Tsubaki’s blood relation with him as he believes that Tsubaki’s is not his son’s child but an illegitimate son of his daughter in law.
Nao realizes that Tsubaki is not different from her when it comes to being outcast in the store and that becomes the reason for their closeness in this fake relationship. Despite of the fact that she hates Tsubaki for what he did years ago but when she spends more time with him, she is reminded the time she spent with him as kids and how close they were. If things didn’t happen as they did, she might be in a real relation with him and not the fake one.
Tsubaki on the other hand still has no idea about Nao’s real identity but he still hasn’t forgotten Sakura as he talks about her to Nao and says that she was the only light in his dark life. He believes that he done and said some really bad things while fighting with his grandfather for his right on store and he would never want Sakura to know about that.
After knowing this it’s harder for Nao to tell him the truth. She has to keep her identity a secret until she finds out the truth behind her mother’s death and the real culprit behind the murder doe which her mother was accused. But her fake relationship seems to change in the meantime and as they get closer Nao is only going to regret for keeping her identity hidden.
As mentioned earlier, this Volume is slow paced as it only develops the characters a bit and moves the story a little forward but it’s not as impactful as the first Volume. We’ll have to wait for the next Volume to see how this continues.
Something’s Wrong With Us Volume 2 has been brought to the West by Kodansha Comics. The translation has been done by Sawa Matsueda Savage and like the previous Volume the translation has no issues and reads well. There are translation notes in this Volume too which explains about the sweets.
Something’s Wrong With Us Volume 2 seems to have dragged the story a little but it has revealed some background about Tsubaki and his standing in his family. It’s not very interesting but moves the story forward so it’s worth your time if you have read the first Volume.
