Rascal Does Not Dream Franchise’s ‘University Arc’ Anime Premieres in 2025

New Anime Adaptation Announcement

The recent Aniplex x Kadokawa Anime Matsuri livestream event unveiled exciting news. The anime adaptation of the “University Student Arc” from the Seishun Buta Yarō (Rascal Does Not Dream) light novel series will premiere as a television anime in 2025. The new series will be titled Seishun Buta Yarō Santa Claus no Yume wo Minai (Rascal Does Not Dream of Santa Claus). However, the announcement left fans wanting more as no additional details were shared.

Series Overview

Kadokawa first published Hajime Kamoshida’s novel series in April 2014 with the title Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai (Seishun Buta Yarō wa Bunny Girl-senpai no Yume wo Minai). Celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, the series has over 3 million copies in circulation. The 14th novel, Seishun Buta Yarō wa Girlfriend no Yume wo Minai (Rascal Does Not Dream of a Girlfriend), is set to ship on August 9. The series will conclude with its 15th volume, Seishun Buta Yarō wa Dear Friend no Yume wo Minai (Rascal Does Not Dream of a Dear Friend), releasing on October 10. Each volume will feature a limited edition bundling a drama CD.

English Releases

Yen Press is bringing the novel series to English-speaking audiences, making it accessible to a broader fanbase.

Television and Film Adaptations

The television anime Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai, based on the light novel series, premiered in Japan in October 2018, spanning 13 episodes and covering up to the fifth novel volume. Aniplex of America streamed the series on various platforms, including Crunchyroll and Funimation.

The anime film Rascal Does Not Dream of a Dreaming Girl, which adapts the sixth and seventh light novel volumes, premiered in Japan in June 2019. Aniplex of America and Funimation Films also brought the film to U.S. theaters.

Recent Sequel Projects

A sequel anime project adapted the eighth and ninth novels: Rascal Does Not Dream of a Sister Venturing Out and Rascal Does Not Dream of a Knapsack Kid.

  • Rascal Does Not Dream of a Sister Venturing Out film debuted in Japan in June 2023, selling 118,108 tickets and earning approximately 175,648,924 yen (about US$1.28 million) in its opening weekend.
  • Rascal Does Not Dream of a Knapsack Kid premiered on December 1, 2023, in 103 theaters across Japan. It debuted at #4, selling 119,000 tickets and earning around 163 million yen (about US$11.12 million) in its first three days.

Aniplex of America screened both films in U.S. theaters, with English subtitles on March 24 and an English dub on March 25.
