Veering from tradition, the storyline of this eagerly awaited film spotlights Baikinman, the well-knwon antagonist of Anpanman. However, in an unexpected twist, Baikinman emerges as a champion of love and bravery. His journey begins as he is whisked away into the magical realm of a picture book. He encounters a vibrant, expansive forest inhabited by fairies. It is here that Baikinman meets the fairy Lulun, who implores him to challenge a rampaging elephant causing chaos in the forest. Despite his initial hesitation, Baikinman valiantly commits to the battle. Alas, the elephant proves too formidable for Baikinman alone, prompting him to ask Lulun to summon Anpanman to safeguard the enchanting world within the picture book.

Last June, fans were treated to the 34th entry in the series, “Soreike! Anpanman Roboly to Pokapoka Present,” which enjoyed a lucrative opening weekend, raking in 113,432,810 yen (approximately US$788,390) during its initial three days of release.

A Milestone Anniversary Celebration

This latest film is more than just another addition to the series; it marks two significant milestones. It celebrates the 35th anniversary of the Anpanman anime as well as the half-century legacy of the Anpanman picture book series.

The beloved “Soreike! Anpanman” TV anime series commenced in 1988 and has upheld a tradition of delighting fans with a new film each summer since 1989. Notably, the 2014 feature “Soreike! Anpanman: Ringo Bōya to Minna no Negai” (Let’s Go! Anpanman: The Apple Boy and Everyone’s Wishes) was the first to be released following the passing of Anpanman’s creator, Takashi Yanase.

Final Thoughts

In a fresh twist of events, “Soreike! Anpanman: Baikinman to Ehon no Lulun” shifts the spotlight onto a character traditionally cast in the role of a villain, inviting audiences to explore and cheer for Baikinman from an entirely new perspective. This film delivers an endearing narrative that aligns perfectly with the dual anniversaries it observes, celebrating the power of transformation and the enduring appeal of classic characters. As Baikinman embraces a heroic path, this tale promises to captivate the hearts of both loyal fans and new viewers, ensuring that the Anpanman series continues to inspire and bring joy to countless individuals around the globe.
