Highschool DxD Characters: High School DxD is a light novel series written and illustrated by Ichiei Ishibumi. Issei Hyoudou, a perverted high school student who is killed on his first date and reincarnated as a Devil by Rias Gremory, is the protagonist of this series.
To further his ambition of becoming a “Harem King” and constructing a harem, he later enrolls in the Occult Research Club. Let’s have a look at the list of Highschool DxD Characters.
Table of Contents
1. Issei Hyodo
The main character and narrator of High School DxD is Issei Hyodo. He is introduced as a second-year student at Kuoh Academy with a reputation for lechery among his peers. He goes on a date with Raynare, who is actually Yuma Amano in disguise.
Issei finds out too late that the date was a trap set by Raynare and is stabbed to death before he can escape. A devil and her servant now, he joins the school’s Occult Research Club after being resurrected by Rias Gremory. He is a “guy who loves girls and is really stupid.
2. Yuuto Kiba
Yuto Kiba has blond hair. On Rias’s team, he takes on the role of knight. With the help of his Sacred Gear,Sword Birth, he can create blades with unique abilities, such as the Holy Eraser (a blade that consumes light) and the Flame Delete. As an added weapon, he can summon a swarm of blades from the earth to slash at his foes from below. Ishibumi made Yuto as an ace of the team and a strong supporting character for Issei to attract female readers.
Yuto is the only child to have survived the Holy Sword Project, an effort to breed new users of the Holy Swords, which can vanquish evil spirits. After narrowly escaping the children’s destruction, he is nearly killed before being rescued by Rias, who later takes him under her wing as a servant.
He plans to destroy what’s left of the Holy Sword Excalibur in an effort to exact revenge for the deaths of his fellow soldiers. His ultimate Balance Breaker sword form, Sword of Betrayer, has both Holy and Demonic attributes because he received a crystal containing the souls of his comrades from the project’s leader, Valper Galilei, during his battle against Kokabiel and Freed Sellzen.
3. Irina Shido
Issei has known the devout Christian Irina Shido since they were kids. Ishibumi created her to stand for the Heaven/Church camp in his three-camp triad. A former tomboy, she now wears her hair in twintails. She’s armed with Excalibur Mimic, the Holy Sword that can assume any form its wielder wishes. She still cares for Issei despite his devilish transformation.
Irina loses to Freed Sellzen and has her Excalibur Mimic taken during the Grigori arc. After being sent to the Church’s headquarters for rest and recuperation, she eventually makes her way back to the summit to lend her support to Michael as a Church representative.
Issei refers to her and Xenovia and Asia as the “Church Trio”. She exhibits Xenovia’s lack of common sense by, for example, buying a fake painting of a saint with their money and then having to beg for food.
4. Akeno Himejima
Akeno Himejima, vice president of the Occult Research Club, has long black hair that she wears in a ponytail. She and Rias are the two most revered older sisters at their school, and Issei describes her as the epitome of a beautiful, cheerful Japanese woman.
Her soft demeanor belies a highly sadistic side that emerges during battle. As queen of Rias, she has many powers, but she is particularly fond of using lightning bolts and other forms of elemental damage. She changes into the garb of a shrine priestess and adopts the moniker Priestess of Thunder in episode four of season one.
5. Asia Argento
Asia Argento is a young woman with blond hair who, while being raised as a nun in the Catholic Church, discovers she has the ability to heal others. The problem is that Diodora Astaroth hurts himself and then has Asia treat him. Therefore, Asia has been cast out of the church. After relocating to Japan and striking up a friendship with Issei, she is tragically murdered by Raynare, who kidnaps her to steal her healing rings.
After a fierce battle, Rias brings her back to life so that he can be her bishop and she can become a devil. [S1 ep 5] She begins living with the Hyodos and enrolls in their local high school. Asia tries to maintain her Christian beliefs despite being a devil, but she always gets a splitting headache after praying or reading the Bible.
6. Xenovia Quarta
Xenovia Quarta is an exorcist and devout Catholic who was raised by Griselda Quarta, a swordswoman turned angel. She and her partner, Irina Shido, have been tasked with finding and either returning or destroying the missing Excalibur blades. She first appears dressed in the garb of the Christian faith, and her hair is blue with a green tint.
Xenovia leaves the church as a heretic after learning that the church’s God does not exist, joins Rias’s team as a devil knight, and transfers to Issei’s year at school. She apologizes to Asia Argento for her behavior during their first meeting, and the two quickly become friends.
Eventually, Xenovia ends up relocating to the Hyodo house, Like the other girls, she develops a crush on Issei and tries to seduce him by claiming that she wants to have a child with him because of their superior genes.
7. Koneko Toujou
Shirone, a white-haired, two-tailed humanoid nekomata, was raised by a devil but is forced to watch as her master is killed in self-defense by Kuroka, who then turns into a stray devil. After being sentenced to death, Shirone is saved by Sirzechs Lucifer, and Rias adopts her, renaming her Koneko Toujou. Eventually, Koneko enrolls as a freshman at Kuoh Academy.
She holds the rook position in Rias’s team, where she is expected to be able to withstand crushing forces and effortlessly throw heavy objects.
She is reserved and level-headed, showing little emotion, but her patience with Issei’s perverted antics is wearing thin. Shiro, a tiny white cat, is her trusted companion. Ishibumi and his editor discussed Koneko’s identity, but it took over a year, until Volume 5, to develop it.
After Issei helped Koneko overcome her apprehension about using Senjutsu and reassured her that he would intervene if she ever got out of hand, Koneko began to develop feelings for him.
8. Gasper
Rias’s team includes a crossdressing dhamphir named Gasper Bloody. His inability to master his Sacred Gear, Forbidden Balor View, has resulted in him being isolated in a room at the edge of the campus and treated as a shut-in. Gasper’s status as a cross-dressing vampire recluse provided Ishibumi with a wealth of material, he says.
Gasper is often made fun of by the other vampires, even those in his own clan, because he is the offspring of a vampire lord and a human woman. With his extreme introversion and the protection of Sacred Gear, he rarely ventures out of his shell.
After the club saves him from the Cattleya Leviathan, he is more willing to go to school, though he still occasionally covers his face with a paper bag or sneaks around in a cardboard box. After ingesting Issei’s blood, he has greater command over his abilities.
9. Ravel Phoenix
Ravel Phoenix is Riser’s younger sister and a former member of his team. She has blond hair. The second volume of the light novels introduces her as a bishop who is hiding her true abilities. She believes her brother is unstoppable, so she chooses to follow in his footsteps.
Her tsundere tendencies emerge after she witnesses Riser’s defeat, and she transfers to Issei’s school to be closer to him. Ishibumi explains that Ravel became a main character because of the overwhelming fan support she received beginning with volume 6.
Ravel’s butler used to tell her heroic tales when she was a little girl, and she grew very fond of them. She wanted to be a strong woman so that she could help her hero, but as she got older, she stopped thinking about that. Ravel’s desire to learn everything she can about Issei was sparked when she saw him risk everything for the woman he loves at Riser’s engagement party.
10. Azazel
The fallen angels’ leader is Azazel. Because of his fascination with the Sacred Gears, he has amassed a sizable collection of them. In the anime, he introduces himself to Issei as a frequent drinker and gamer who often invites Issei along. However, halfway through the second anime series, he makes a proper introduction. He’ll be teaching at Kuoh and serving as the club’s advisor.
Ishibumi made Azazel into a coach so that he wouldn’t have to compete in Rating Games and so that he and Yuto Kiba could win over female readers of their respective series. As a “effective and cool explanation character,” he is also a tool in his arsenal. This is the coda to Letters to the Fourth.
Sirzechs Lucifer claims that Azazel’s aversion to battle is why the Fallen Angels were the first to flee the conflict. Calm and collected, he arranges a meeting between the Devil and Angel leaders to broker a peace treaty.
Azazel loses an arm to Cattleya Leviathan and replaces it with a prosthetic he created using the technology he discovered while studying Sacred Gear. Fafnir, the Golden Dragon, is one of the five Dragon Kings, and Azazel has a self-made artificial Sacred Gear with which to seal him.
11. Ophis
Ophis is a dragon with the ability to transform into a humanoid with black hair; she is also known as the Ouroboros Dragon[s] and the Infinite Dragon God. She is said to be more powerful than God and the devil kings. The Chaos Brigade was formed by her in an effort to expel Great Red from the Dimensional Gap.
However, Cao Cao betrayed her and stole her power in order to create another Ophis, ostensibly rendering her powerless.
She had already released her powers in the forms of snakes before Cao Cao came to steal them, but Cao Cao still underestimated her. Therefore, she retained some of her abilities. Ophis, like Great Red, cares only about Great Red and does not like to get involved in the affairs of the world.
Since Great Red is the Chaos Brigade’s nominal focus, any decisions or actions that have nothing to do with her have been made by the members themselves.
In Volume 12, Great Red saves her and she assists him in repairing Issei’s body. After the battle with the Jabberwocky, the two were overheard saying, “Zoom Zoom Iyaaan,” much to the chagrin of Issei and Ddraig.
Since Issei is her first friend and offered her shelter in his home in Volume 11, it is safe to assume that she has a great deal of affection for him. This is significant because, just by having tea and playing cards together, she helped protect Asia and Irina later in the volume.
Issei claims that contrary to popular belief, Ophis is not evil but rather naive and willing to be used by the Chaos Brigade in exchange for the death of Great Red.
12. Rossweisse
Rossweisse is a Valkyrie with silver hair who is skilled in Norse magic. She dresses in business suits or white armor. Rossweisse is introduced as Odin’s bodyguard; she constantly stops him from doing dirty things, but Odin constantly teases her about not having a boyfriend.
After the battle with Loki and Fenrir, Odin abandons her in Issei’s town; later, Rias convinces her to become her servant; the two of them become teachers at Kuoh Academy, with Rias holding the rank of “Rook” alongside Koneko.
She hasn’t decided whether or not she likes Issei yet, in contrast to the majority of the female characters. She is very sensitive about being mocked for her single status and takes it personally. Whenever she tries to stop Odin from being crude, he uses this to knock the wind out of her.
Issei has dubbed her “The 100-Yen Shop Valkyrie” because of her penchant for shopping at discount stores. When Issei used dress break on her during their trip to Kyoto so that he could spy on the female students in the hot springs, she reacted angrily and lectured him about destroying her clothes before feeling embarrassed about being naked. In the eighth volume, she moves into the Hyodo House.
13. Kokabiel
Kokabiel, the long-haired fallen angel who rules the Grigoris, is their leader. He intends to start a new war between the angels, devils, and fallen angels, so he steals the Excalibur swords. After Irina is hurt, the student council and the Occult Research Club team up to take on Kokabiel.
Issei knocks Rias out cold, but not before he takes a punch to the face. To control Kokabiel, Azazel calls in Vali Lucifer for help. In the end, Azazel imprisons Kokabiel in the depths of the Underworld, in a place called Cocytus. [needs volume and issue number] He’s the one who breaks the news to Rias, Xenovia, and the rest that the previous great war resulted in the deaths of God and the Four Devil Kings.
14. Raynare
Issei’s first adversary is the fallen angel Raynare. In the first episode, she asks Issei out on a date while posing as a schoolgirl named Yuma Amano, but at the end of the evening she stabs him in the stomach with a spear of light. She is on a mission to reclaim Asia Argento so she can use her Sacred Gear, Twilight Healing, for herself. Raynare is ultimately killed by Rias, but not before she is attacked by Issei and his allies.
Despite her untimely demise, Raynare’s actions left a lasting impression on Issei, making him reluctant to express his feelings for Rias or the other girls for fear of being reminded of her. However, after hearing the assurances of his friends Akeno, Koneko, and Asia that they love him and will never betray him like Raynare did, Issei was able to heal his broken heart and regain his confidence.
15. Diodora Astaroth
Astaroth’s younger brother and current heir to the family throne. He is the Devil who brought about Asia’s condemnation as a heretic and her excommunication from the Church. Freed reveals that Diodora has a nun fetish and that all of his servants are nuns and maidens that he acquired from all over the world after he admitted to being an ally of the Chaos Brigade. That once he had them under his control, he would lure them away from the Church and rape them while recording the crime.
Seeing their utter desperation and lack of faith in a positive outcome makes it that much more satisfying for him. To get Asia out of the Church and into his service, he deliberately injured himself so that she would heal him. He originally intended to turn Asia into a Devil while giving off the impression that he was the “good guy” by “rescuing” her after Raynare killed her. He hates Issei for, in his words, “stealing Asia from him,” and he tries to kill the latter. However, Issei ultimately defeats him, and Shalba Beelzebub kills him with a light weapon.
