Kakushigoto: My Dad's Secret Ambition Vol. 1 - Review

There is always something that a person hides from others. Each and every person with a secret has a reason to keep it hidden from others. There are various reason like it is something we are ashamed of, or something we don’t like to talk about, or it can also be something illegal. Gotou Kashuki also has one such secret and that is his occupation as an erotic mangaka. He might not want to keep it a secret but being a father of a little girl, it can be problematic and so he decides to rather keep his identity as an erotic mangaka hidden forever.

Kakushigoto: My Dad’s Secret along with its appealing title, did not fail to grab our attention from the very beginning. The title is enough to attract someone to read it and the ambition mentioned in the title is a secret that everyone would love to read to about. Who wouldn’t like to read about an erotic mangaka? The series manages to keep us stick to it from the first page and then we are involved in its world until the end. It’s not just the plot and concept that keeps us hooked to it but the visuals and the style of the manga is relaxing and makes it more appealing.

The way Gotou Kakushi keep his evil work hidden form his daughter is admirable. Parental love usually shown in manga is quite dramatic and unrealistic. Even if it seems sweet and adorable, it something we can’t relate to. But the Gotou’s love for his daughter is very relatable and sometimes funny like modifying a shirt so a man with tight on his head can’t be seen.

One other good thing about Kakushigoto: My Dad’s Secret Ambition is that if you know the plot of the story, you can pick any chapter of the manga and read it easily without having any confusion. Atleast the first volume has short story arcs that are easily understandable if you do not read from the start. Each chapter has its own story in it. Gotou always caught up in an unfortunate situations but that’s what makes it fun and interesting read.

Those who anticipate some erotic and steamy stuff to see in this manga might be disappointed. Althought the story is about an erotic mangaka and you might find some erotic and perverted things in the manga but it is depicted in a different way. They are not shown in a sensual way but rather in a funny way. These kind of erotic scenes are not pointless as they all are related to the story so there is a lack of fanservice in this manga.

The comedy of the series does not always hit the right chord. Erotica is the main source of funny element in the series as there is always some situations that has something to do with the erotic part. The concept is good but not very well executed. There are many moments that are supposed to be funny but doesn’t make you laugh. It’s like those people who tries to be funny, cracking jokes but dialed to make people laugh around them. But there are also some well written hilarious moments too.

Kakushigoto: My Dad's Secret Ambition Vol. 1 - Review

Kakushigoto: My Dad’s Secret Ambition is fun and relaxing. It’s something you would like to read in your leisure time to relax and have good time. There are some jokes that you might find weird and fail to deliver the purpose of making you laugh but it doesn’t make it any less interesting. Even those who find it unattractive and less appealing should give it a chance as it can change your expectations within a few pages.
