Somali to Mori no Kamisama Episode 12: Review

[the_ad_group id="23498"]

The much-anticipated final episode of Somali to Mori no Kamisama is here and it was not as emotional as I thought it would be. It still managed to make me cry but not the way I expected. As the manga is still in continuation, so there is ore to their journey along with Shizuno and Yabashira. It wasn’t a sad episode as I have been predicting since the beginning but still, there were some emotional scenes that made our eyes filled with tears.

Golem managed to control his anger sooner than expected and he also did not cause as much damage as I thought to occur. It is not a bad thing as but still, he caused enough damage to himself.  Somali is such a nice and innocent little angel. Rose caused so much trouble to her and almost got her killed but still, she tried to save her from Golem. If Rosa has some morality, she might change her hideous perception towards humans. This whole scene of controlling rage and Somali taming the angry Golem make think of Sororo where Hyakkimaru would get angry and berserk if Dororo is abducted or harmed which always made Dororo trying to make him relax when we all hope that he does not end up killing anyone. Although Hyakkimaru having no humanity did kill the bad guys Golem controlled himself before doing such thing. But still this whole scenario in which the angry one is controlled by the one they loose control for is somewhat similar. When Golem snaps out of his anger mode, he goes unconscious after which he wakes up in the woods. It was not specified for how much time he has been out but according to Yabashira and Shizuno, he was out for long. It was not a long scene and we didn’t get to see how Rosa ended up or what exactly happened afterward but it’s okay.

The show moves towards a little brighter path which made me a little scary as it was the final episode. They move towards a sparkling dog village with some festivities going on and everyone seems to enjoy that occasion with laughter and joy. It was quite unusual to jump into such a happy environment right after that chaotic scene but later it did get a little emotional with some heavy dialogues which showed its significant later. Although the environment changed abruptly still it was nice to see them having fun where we also get to see Golem buying some stuff for Somali that asked for and Yabashira hold her up so that she could see clearly. There were many cute wholesome moments warm our hearts with the love among those four people. But then Golem vanishes and things start to get emotional.

In my opinion, Somali had some idea about Golem running out of time. She also heard Shizuno talking about it earlier. After all that and watching golem damaging his own body, she might have understood the truth or at least something bad is about to happen that has been kept secret from her. She finds him on the lake and reminds him of the promise he made about living together forever. She does not believe that he has no emotions by reminding him of all those moments where he expressed them freely like not showing leniency at the time she becomes disobedient to him, being cautious and protective while she is running here and there, becoming anxious when she becomes sick and this very moment he was afraid which Somali didn’t mention about. He fears to get out of control where he could end up hurting Somali or she could end up in a danger. Like all the time he didn’t realize that but he was having fear because of his immense love for Somali. It was really great to see Golem’s development throughout the series. In the beginning, he was aloof and emotionless but gradually became more considerate towards her and started to show different emotions as well and eventually ended up loving her like a father. The most significant part about his development is his new fat in souls. During this festival in the town, the villagers gave an explanation about the harvest festivals and the denotation of flowers, Golem didn’t understand that and simply denied it as he believed that the one who dies goes back to the Earth.  The kind of creature, Golem is, it’s not hard to understand why Golem believes that. But we see him making the same promise again in the end that he will always stay with him. The rest of the explanation is given in his monologue where he actually vows to stay by her side forever even after he dies, he will stay with her as soul. The flowers floating in the sky around them imply his new faith and he strongly believes in it. It also signifies his love for Somali. He will leave this world one day but as long as he lives he wants to devote it to Somali and will stay with her no matter what. This scene was so beautiful that I could not help but cry.

There was also a post-credit scene where we see Golem and Somali wearing different clothes and they are in a new town with Shizuno and Yabashira. I really like it when these two accompany them on their journey. But I wonder are they still looking for humans. Anyway it was good to see them together and was a beautiful scene.

This show was amazing and since I’m fond of family shows, I love the way this anime has taught the concept of the family particularly those where people with broken hearts and sad past support each other and become family for each other. Golem and Somali are very different people who are not even from the same clan and they met in an unusual circumstance but still, they got closer to each other and loved each other like a real family. We saw them meeting others as well during their journey and in the process, they learn more about love and family.

Although the anime series was about Somali and Golem finding other humans, in each episode, there was a new story with new characters that they meet in a new place and every story lasts for about 2 episodes where we also get attached to those new characters. Episodic shows can be a little boring and plain with new stories and characters every time but this anime managed to keep it interesting and linked with the original plot while introducing us to new characters and their story. Nothing was repetitive but the only slow-paced arc was the witch episode except for the flashback part. It pretty much showed things we have seen before but still, it was interesting.

Each arc and all the characters introduced I felt were important, even if they didn’t stick around for long. They all served a purpose when it came to adding lore to the world, or pushing the development of Golem and/or Somali and their relationship with each other. Kikila and his father helped Golem as a father, and Somali making her first friend. Uzoi and Haitora also showed themselves like a broken family and a humans’ perspective of their world. Shizuno and Yabashira became their close friends and Shizuno sort of also became a confidant to Golem to air out his thoughts and grievances about his situation. They all serve a purpose and they all matter and contributed in their own way, and that’s so important. The show wouldn’t be as enjoyable if the only good characters were Golem and Somali. I’ve discussed a lot about Golem’s character but Somali is also a very interesting character. She is an adorable, nice and caring girl who does not just care about Golem but everyone. She is very sweet and pure and adds some humor in the series. Sometimes she acts as a mature person as she has some of her own perceptions regarding life and this world, she lives in. She has the cuteness of a little child and maturity of a grownup that she acquired throughout her journey. I kid like her is the most loveable and enjoyable that you can watch and play with for hours and Somali is another reason why this show brings a smile on our face.

The scene after credits shows that this might not be the only season and may continue from here and it is possible as the manga is still in continuation. I really hope for another season as there so much that can be explored in this unique and intriguing setting. Like the way between humans and creatures. It made us feel bad for both but it was more against humans. But all in all, it was a very amusing and fascinating series to watch with the beautiful visuals, heartwarming story, and thought-provoking messages. The show is filled with immense love so it is highly recommendable to those who like to watch shows about family.
