Hatena Illusion Episode 4: Review

Maeve has still not returned home as she is heading towards her family home to deal with some unfinished business (although I want to assume she is going there because of the attack at Kana). But I’m glad that she is not missing. Mamoru comes back and informs Makato that he doesn’t need to be taught as he is able to use artifact now (seriously?!) and then he is off to his  next destination. The rest of the entire episode revolves around why Yumemi never wished to go to school.

The episode was very slow paced. Why on earth was an entire episode on such a thing? I know we shouldn’t criticize an anime episode for being slow as most of the anime are fast paced and that’s something we mostly complain about as we want things to take time but slow episode sometimes become boring if it is not interesting enough. Although I wanted to know about Yumemi and her backstory. I think one reason why this episode about Yumemi turn out boring because the character it was about is not a very lively character so this could have been expected. She becomes nervous and when she has no idea how to respond to someone like she had no idea that to say in reply of an apology. (I like the part where she used magic to show her forgiveness to boys). She speaks politely and stay calm even in anger, she is kind of a person who doesn’t start the conversation. She is satisfied with her class fellow Mami leading the conversation or taking magic lessons from Makato. She is shy and is not very confident when it comes to communicating with others like the time she didn’t know what to say when someone apologizes. Even if the episode was boring, it validates the things she is facing now like boys commenting on her blonde hair as strange, and why she gets dishearten when she hears people saying she is different from her sister Kana.

Talking about weaknesses and help nesses, I really want to learn more about Makato or may be a backstory. Foe now there is nothing more about him other than he is a good person and not just good, he is genuinely sweetest person of the series. I was flattered when he said good things to Yumemi and Kana and told them that they will be beautiful in their own way when they grow up. But I’m sure there is more to Makato’s story then just being nice to everyone.

Then there is Mamoru. I am starting to dislike him. He made promise to Makato for teaching him the magic and no matter what the reason is, he can’t just appear in front of him to tell him that his magic depends on artifacts and disappears in a blink without fulfilling his promise. Telling him what he needs to learn next is not enough, how he is supposed to learn that without any guidance. I mean he did not come all the way to him to learn everything himself. Makato could understand one thing from his talk that Mamoru has some responsibilities as a magician to turn away his focus from Maeve. This will help Makato in future encounters as he understands the best possible method to back Kana at the time of rescue missions. What’s funny is what Yumemi mentions that Makato is actually a true magician compared to her father as he doesn’t need artifacts to use magic

As far as the animation goes. It seemed poor even if we one doesn’t care much about the animation quality. Although, the major and important scenes are good and clean enough like the artifact battle scene between Muff and Gaugau. Thankfully that was visually appealing and clean enough to be enjoyed (Gagau can’t be taken lightly but it’s good that Muff has some pretty good flexibility or else it would have shattered into pieces.) But there were some grave mistakes that can’t be ignored. For example the classroom which was referred as filled with students but seemed empty and even the dialogues were out of sync at that moment. Some scenes were not organized and frames were poorly structured. Good thing is that these scenes were not very important but one just can’t ignore that.

Overall, the episode was boring and now I’m not sure if this series will be good enough as it progresses. But, I’m glad that the new antagonist, Tominozawa or Tomi-Tomi has arrived. Looks like Jeeves know her, if that’s the case, it will be interesting but I really hope that they won’t waste time on the details of Emma or Jeeves and Kana and Yumemi knowing the relatives of Maeve. I really want to see Kana and Makato to start their missions as phantom thieves because that’s actually what I started watching this series for.
