List of filler episodes for Gintama in chronological order – Learn if it is worth watching
Episode 1 & 2: You Guys!! Do You Even Have a Gintama? (Part 1 & 2) – aired 04/04/2006
The past of each character is revealed as the story develops in the original manga sequence. While this filler is the complete opposite: Gintama, Shinpachi, Kagura, and Sadaharu are all together, and the remaining characters have known the gang for some time.
It will still give a brief introduction to each new character that appears in each scene. Their technique to starting the anime is similar to someone who reads the manga first: unusual. Gintama is known for many parodies and out-of-the-box jokes that you won’t find in other shounen mangas.
Episode 50 – Pending Means Pending, It’s Not Final – aired 04/05/2007, Start of Season 2
Gintama is in its second year of anime and Season 2, so the production team wants to give it a boost! As the anime’s ratings began to fall after its release, the characters suggested changing the story’s genre in order to attract more viewers.
This episode features so many parodies (anime, classical stories, movies, and even a cookery show) that it’s difficult to comprehend how the producers were brave enough to air it as Season 2’s first episode. As an anime fan who enjoys crossovers, this is quite amusing, and you will recognize at least three or more shows as you watch it (like how they came up with a movie title: Gin Tama the Movie: DragonBleaPiece). There are more characters in this filler than in the first two episodes, and they are creatures (because not everyone is human, BTW) from the previous season.
Episode 57: Keep an Eye On the Chief for The Day – aired 05/17/2007
A story about Otsuu-chan taking on the role of Shinsengumi’s commander for a day in order to improve the latter’s reputation in Edo. It’s a filler episode, but it’s quite amusing, especially how the Shinsengumi attempted to comply with all the demands made by the kidnappers of Otsuu-chan. If you like Okita and Hijikata, you have to watch this episode.
Episode 75: Don’t Complain About Your Job at Home, Do It Somewhere Else – aired 09/27/2007
Gintama has no special half-season in the first season, and apparently this time they have decided to do one. The first opening song is distinct from the rest of the series since it features Otsuu-debut chan’s song, “Your Mother is Chome-Chome,” with a beep sound when she sings the “Chome-chome” line. There’s nothing exceptional about this episode because it’s just a recap episode in which the Yorozuya staff recalls major scenes from Season 1 to the present day. It also includes some of the mangaka’s random musings as well as a preview of the upcoming film that year. There is a plot twist that is particularly interesting for Takasugi fans, and that is the only part that is worth watching here.
Episode 106: Love Is Often Played Out in Sudden Death – aired 05/15/2008
Gintama decided to have a soccer episode because the anime’s rising popularity was attributed to its schedule airing before Prince of Tennis on TV. Team FC Oedo, as expected, does not obey soccer rules during live play, but that is part of what makes it exciting. Soccer is war… no doubt about it.
Episode 114: They Say Soy Sauce On Pudding Tastes Like Sea Urchin, But Soy Sauce On Pudding Only Tastes Like Pudding and Soy Sauce – aired 07/10/2008
A filler episode with no real purpose other than, you know, to fill the time. Papa-rin, also known as Matsudaira, wants to keep the men who are hitting his daughter at bay, and Hijikata has stepped in to take over the position of his superior. But something came up that required Yorozuya’s expertise. In this episode, you’ll get to meet and say goodbye to the Prince of Planet Mayo Maniac.
Episode 124: When Nagging Goes Too Far It Becomes Intimidating – aired 09/18/2008
Filler added at the middle of the Gintama anime series, which is about Otsuu-idol chan’s issue. After the credits have rolled, there is a classroom scene in which the characters discuss various movies and video games that have recently had their third release. The episode is a little dull, and it is highly recommended that you skip it.

Episode 125: Entering The Final Chapter! – aired 09/25/2008
Another filler episode, following the previous week’s filler. An upfront scam for bait viewers (as Kagura said here) that the anime reaches its final chapter in the middle of 3rd year. It is a recap episode in which the Yorozuya staff discusses previous scenes they worked on, including the opening scene from episode 3 that was previously shown in recap episodes. It’s quite acceptable to skip.
Episode 135: Before Worrying About the Earth, Think About the Even More Endangered Future of ‘Gintaman’ – 12/04/2008
A collaboration between Gintama and the manga’s editor, Daito, as they attempt to restore Gintaman’s decreasing popularity. It’s kind of like the filler episode 50 where they try to change the anime genre and the drawing style.
Episode 137: 99% Of Men Aren’t Confident in Confessing Their Love – aired 12/18/2008
Yorozuya team explained the full reason behind this filler at the beginning, but because this year there is no Japan World series, they are 1 short story to broadcast. You will learn the following words in this episode: Onion Knight and 1LDK.
Episode 150: If You Can’t Beat Them, Join Them – aired 03/26/2009
The opening mentioned Sunrise’s sudden end to produce the anime due to the company’s financial crisis. As a result, they have no choice but to show the final episode of Year 4 to the viewers… in different versions. It’s unpleasant to see the same scenarios repeated, but with different variations depending on what they want.
Episode 155: The Other Side of the Other Side of the Other Side Would Be the Other Side – aired 04/30/2009
A story about the uninspiring Hasegawa and his unfortunate series of events. Watch him bet his underpants and 300 yen to avoid being labelled a DORK (Dumb Old Retarded Kook). This is just a filler you can skip at any time.
Episode 164: That Matsutake Soup Stuff Tastes Better Than the Real Deal – aired 07/02/2009
No reason given for the fillers this time, but there are two stories in this episode, one of which is a parody of Doraemon. Shinpachi gets more screen time than the rest of Team Yorozuya in this episode.
Episode 166: Two Is Better Than One. Two People Are Better Than One – aired 07/16/2009
A filler episode that must be seen because Gintama and Hijikata are handcuffed for a day. One of the best filler stories in the anime, with plenty of laughs involving two of the Gintama universe’s most beloved characters.
Episode 171: You’ll Get Sued If All You Do Is Copy Others – aired 08/20/2009
Gintama created a special episode filler to commemorate Gundam’s 30th anniversary, which is produced by the same animation studio (Sunrise). Numerous parodies of Gundam were included throughout the episode, but knowing this anime, they won’t limit themselves to just one for their gag jokes.
Episode 173: It’s What’s On the Inside That Counts – aired 09/03/2009
Gintama and Hijikata are featured in Episode 166, while Zura, also known as Katsura, is featured in this episode. Zura is also a member of the Old Jouishishi (the anti Amanto samurai faction at the beginning). It’s also a two-part filler, with the second scenario involving Sadaharu and Gin-san swapping bodies. This month was unusual because there were three filler episodes and by far the highest number in the history of Gintama’s animation.
[the_ad id=”178″]
Episode 174: Are There Still People Who Go to The Ocean and Yell Out ‘Bakayaro’? – aired 09/10/2009
Another story after the last week and a two-part story about Hasegawa, Yorozuya and a random office worker. The stories are too far apart and can be skipped because they have no effect on the story’s original flow.
Episode 176: Countdown Begins – aired 09/24/2009
The gang talked about earlier 125 and 150 filler episodes, how they baited viewers at the false ending of Gintama. This is due to the title of the episode, “Countdown Begins,” but the content is more of a review episode containing the best Gintama lines, the anime’s Beat Crusader song, “Wo Ai Ni,” and Prince Hata offering to voice over in the countdown. He was in charge of re-doing Takasugi’s voice over from filler episode 75.
Episode 185: Hometowns and Boobs Are Best Thought from Afar – aired 11/28/2009
Filler was an obvious parody of the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory film, in which Hijikata, as a Shinsengumi, makes every effort to locate the Mayorin ticket. The second segment follows Yorozuya as he attempts to remove a large bee hive from the shrine. An episode that isn’t related to the main plot but features a lot of funny sequences… and parodies.
Episode 209: Nothing Lasts Forever, including Parents, Money, Youth, Your Room, Dress Shirts, Me, You, and the Gintama Anime – aired 05/23/2011
The episode’s opening scene was confusing, and there was even a trailer for what appeared to be a film in production, but upon checking the internet, there wasn’t… It was a good thing that the characters in this episode were straightforward. At the end, there was a parallel story with Takasugi as the main character.
Episode 252: We’re Sorry – aired 03/26/2012
Team Yorozuya’s costumes are the same as what they wore in the episode 209 filler while sitting in a kotatsu. This was an apology for all of the parodies and references outside of the anime that caused so much trouble for the production over the last 6 years. Key characters attempted to demonstrate their sincerity in their own unique ways while reflecting on the things they should apologize for. The filler episode also served as the anime’s final episode, promising viewers a better Gintama series in the near future. The anime series returned to TV Tokyo after a six-months break.
Episode 367: There Are Lines Even Villains Can’t Cross – aired 10/08/2018
An episode with two parts, the second explaining why the anime ended. Because this was supposed to be the final episode at the time, there were a lot of character appearances, including the mangaka discussing the abrupt ending.
Gintama The Final was released in Japan on January 8, 2021. After 367, there were no more fillers. Gintama is one of the most popular anime series, so having a low filler percentage during its broadcast is unusual. Some fillers were used to explain topics affecting the manga but not the anime.
